Menopause is a biological and physiological process of considerable importance in a woman’s life. It occurs approximately between the ages of 45 and 55 in 65-70% of women. 25% have it before the age of 45 and 5-10% after 55.

Improving the skin of women in menopause is one of the challenges of the cosmetic industry, and each skin requires specific care.

Menopause will become longer

The current average life expectancy of European women is 81 years, so it is estimated that many women can live up to a third of their lives in a postmenopausal state. For this reason it is important ensuring that the alterations that develop during this period, (all of which are physiological), begin as late as possible, are as less intense and symptomatic as possible and allow a good quality of life for women.

Changes in the skin during the menopauseBody alterations during the menopause

Most changes are bone and cardiovascular alterations. However, the skin also undergoes significant alterations at this stage of life. The subsequent oestrogen deficiency causes a series of organic changes, including a decrease in skin collagen and skin aging. During this period, and due to the progressive decrease in sexual hormones, a series of changes can be found in the morphology and functioning of the integument as a whole.

Changes in the skin during the menopause

The skin is partially regulated by the female hormones par excellence, estrogens, and these have a decisive influence on its thickness, hydration, pigmentation and the regulation of the amount of sebum. They also promote the renewal of dermal cells and stimulate the synthesis of collagen and elastin fibres in the epidermis for better skin elasticity.

During the menopause, the decrease in oestrogen production causes an acceleration of skin aging. The most common symptoms are the following ones:

  • The skin dehydrates more easily, presenting a dry and rough aspect.
  • It loses freshness and luminosity, and its tone is no longer uniform.
  • It decreases in thickness, loses elasticity, and becomes brittle and prone to damage.
  • The number and depth of wrinkles is intensified. As elastin and collagen fibres degrade, the skin loses firmness and sags. Sagging is most noticeable on the lower face and neck, as well as on the inside of the arms and legs.
  • Dark spots appear, especially in the areas most exposed to the sun, such as the face and hands.

How to reduce the menopause effects on our skin

There is really no prevention to avoid hormonal skin aging due to menopause, but along with general measures such as avoiding obesity or overweight and doing exercise, we can avoid as much as possible the photo-aging of the skin during our young age using measures of photo-protection like:

  • Expose to the sun as little as possible when it is more intense.
  • Protect ourselves with appropriate clothing, hat, umbrella, etc. during the most intense hours of sunlight.
  • Use sunscreens that protect us from ultraviolet A and B radiation to avoid added ageing by the action of sunlight.

You can read more about how to protect our skin from the sun in our previous blog post here.
